The holiday season has a way of sneaking up on us, and with it comes a lot of extra costs. Between gifts, travel, entertaining and seasonal activities, it’s easy for expenses to pile up quickly. With a bit of planning and intention, however, you can enjoy the holidays without stretching your budget (or your stress levels).

Here are some practical tips to help you stay in control this season:

1. Start with a holiday budget. Before the festivities begin, map out what you expect to spend. Include everything applicable – gifts, food, décor, events, charitable donations and travel. Having a number in mind prevents impulse purchases and helps you stay grounded as the season gets busy.

2. Prioritize what matters most. Not every holiday activity or tradition requires a big spend. Decide what’s most meaningful for you and your family. Allocate more of your budget to those priorities and scale back on the items that are less important.

3. Track your spending in real time. A simple spreadsheet or budgeting app can go a long way. Logging purchases as you go helps you spot when you’re getting off track and allows you to adjust before you get too far out of control.

4. Look for creative gift alternatives. You don’t need to overspend to show you care. Consider homemade or thrifted gifts, shared experiences, group gifting or setting spending limits with family and friends. Many people appreciate thoughtful gestures far more than high price tags.

5. Plan for next year – starting now. Once the holiday dust settles, take note of what worked and what didn’t. If the season stretched you financially, consider setting aside a small amount each month throughout the year. Even $20-$50 a month can build a meaningful holiday fund by next December.

6. Be mindful with credit. It’s tempting to rely on credit cards for holiday shopping, but remember that interest can turn small purchases into long-term costs. Use credit when it benefits you – like for rewards or extended warranties – but aim to pay balances off quickly.

Managing holiday spending doesn’t mean saying no to celebration. It means keeping your financial well-being intact so you can enjoy the season with more joy and less worry.
